Luísa Ferreira Bastos is an Assistant Researcher at the Institute of Research and Innovation for Healthcare, and is an Invited Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. She is a co-inventor of the CAE Lucina maternal-fetal simulator for healthcare education and training, which was launched worldwide in 2014. She was a co-organizer and president of the scientific committee of the first and second International Conferences of Alternatives to Animal Experimentation in 2013 and 2015. She has a Licentiate Degree in Applied Mathematics, a Master’s Degree in Computational Methods and a Doctorate Degree in Biomedical Engineering. Her current research focus is biomedical knowledge modeling for healthcare. Such models can provide a better understanding of the potential impact of research on healthcare improvement, informing researchers in their projects design, and policymakers and research funders in their decision making. The way knowledge is incorporated in in silico models of human physiology is an important piece of this work.
